Kyiv City Council and Visa to implement digital payments on Kyiv's ground transport

On October 15, 2022, a cashless contactless payment system was launched in Kyiv’s ground public transport. From now on, you can pay the fare with any bank card or device with an NFC chip (smartphone, watch, etc.).

Kyiv, October 15, 2022 — The Kyiv City Council, with the support of Visa, the global digital payments leader, has launched an innovative solution for Kyiv residents that will make public transport more convenient, comfortable and efficient.

The initiative enables cashless payments in the capital's public ground transport. Residents of the city will be able to use a convenient and modern way of paying for travel using a contactless bank card, smartphone or any other device with NFC technology.

“To pay the fare, you have to simply tap a bank card or a gadget with the contactless payment function to the validator. Routes where the system is available are marked with branded stickers on validators. In the next two to three weeks, the system will work on all routes and types of communal ground public transport,” commented Vitali Klitschko, Kyiv Mayor.

To confirm the fare, you must tell the controller the last 4 digits of your card number, so that the transaction can be identified. The service allows you to use both the "Kyiv Tsyfrovyi" (“Digital Kyiv”) application and the “Kartka kyianyna” (“Kyiv resident’s card”).

“The expansion of the cashless payment system in public transport is one of Visa's key priorities. In these difficult times, we are trying to help the country continue its path of building a digital economy. Therefore, cooperation with the Kyiv City Council made it possible to implement an innovative solution for paying for travel in public transport. From now on, both the city authorities and transport operators will have more transparent control over payments, and passengers will forget about using cash on municipal transport,” comments Svitlana Chyrva, Visa Vice President, Country Manager for Ukraine and Moldova.

Visa began implementing contactless payments in Ukraine in 2018. The country is the regional leader in the number of connections to the technology: with the participation of Visa, it was implemented in 16 cities. In particular, in late June, the technology was introduced in Cherkasy.

Due to the purposeful policy of the state and city authorities in support of digitalization, Visa, together with its partners, plans to continue to create a convenient urban payment ecosystem, which is in constant demand from citizens.

We would also like to add that in 2021, Visa partnered with JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia” (“Ukrainian Railways”) to launch a Viber and Telegram chatbot to sell tickets.

In addition, on October 3, Visa announced the achievement of 1 billion contactless transactions in public transit worldwide. According to the Future of Urban Mobility Survey, 91% of passengers expect the possibility of contactless payment in transport, and almost a third named this option as a main motivator to use public transport.

In the future, Visa's urban mobility team hopes to further optimize transportation solutions into a single integrated ecosystem. To this end, the company continues to work closely with the government and local authorities, as well as share its global experience in improving and simplifying payments in public transport.
